Reasons Why Tooth Extractions Are Necessary
Usually, tooth extractions are reserved for particularly dire circumstances, like if a tooth is so damaged that it cannot support a restoration. Of course, that’s not the only reason we will recommend this restorative treatment. It’s also helpful if your wisdom teeth are growing in sideways, we need to make room in your mouth for orthodontic treatment, or we are creating a partial or full denture. If you have any questions about your treatment plan, including why we recommend having your tooth extracted at all, don’t hesitate to let us know – we’re here to answer any questions you have!
The Process of Removing a Tooth
Although the tooth extraction process will look slightly different depending on the reason for the tooth extraction and whether or not the tooth has broken through the gumline, we always numb your mouth first. Only after you’re completely numb will Dr. Vidya begin the extraction process. Usually, this involves gently rocking the tooth loose until it’s ready to be removed. Of course, if the tooth is trapped underneath the gumline, that won’t work. In that case, a small incision needs to be made in your gums first. Then, the tooth can be removed in sections.
Tooth Extraction Aftercare
When you leave our office, we will share what to do (and what not to do) to ensure you heal as comfortably and quickly as possible. That includes:
- Keeping your head elevated, even while you sleep
- Changing the gauze as needed
- Eating very soft foods, like applesauce
- Drinking lots of water
- Not using a straw, spitting, or smoking
- Brushing carefully around the extraction site
Tooth extractions are relatively rare for patients, so it’s only natural to have questions! If you want to learn more about the process, the cost, or anything else related to your care, don’t hesitate to let us know. We look forward to helping you on your journey to your best smile.
